eLearning activity: The anatomy of breathing: from Gray's to modern practice
This immersive short activity introduces learners to the core structures involved in breathing, using original anatomical plates from Gray’s Anatomy to bring the subject to life. It breaks down the mechanics of respiration into clear, beautifully presented cards that encourage exploration, reflection and close visual study.
Learners navigate through a carousel of themed cards, each revealing a different anatomical structure and its role in the breathing process. A central “open details” interaction allows deeper dives into selected topics, while still keeping the overall experience fluid and self-directed.
The design is calm and elegant, built around large anatomical illustrations and a soft visual palette that focuses attention on the content. Motion is subtle but expressive, with custom animations guiding the learner through each reveal. Despite the complexity of the underlying system, the interface feels simple and intuitive, placing imagery and understanding at the forefront.
Accessibility is carefully engineered at every level. Screen reader users encounter a clear, logical narrative, with each card’s information delivered in the correct order. A combination of visible buttons and off-stage navigational controls ensures the full carousel is fully operable via keyboard and assistive technologies, even though Storyline doesn’t natively support this behaviour. Decorative images are hidden from accessibility tools, alternative text is precise and meaningful, and focus order is tightly managed to avoid repetition or confusion.
Behind the scenes, the activity uses a highly customised structure: layered card systems, a variable-driven index, duplicated off-screen arrow controls, responsive state changes and inventive workarounds to achieve smooth, accessible behaviour not achievable with Storyline alone. The result is a seamless experience that feels effortless for learners, while offering depth and technical sophistication under the surface.
This approach blends clarity, visual richness, interaction and accessibility, making the mechanics of breathing not only understandable, but genuinely engaging.
