eLearning activity: Clear writing at work

This short eLearning activity introduces learners to the principles of clear workplace communication. It highlights common problems such as jargon, slang and over-formality, then shows how to improve them with direct and accessible alternatives.

Learners explore a grid of nine topic tiles. Each reveals an example of poor writing, followed by improved UK and US versions presented through flag buttons. This structure encourages comparison and reflection, while a reset button allows learners to return to the grid and choose another topic.

The design is clean and intuitive, with all navigation handled through the tiles and buttons on the page. There is no menu, reducing distractions and creating a focused, immersive experience.

Accessibility is built into the structure. Screen reader users hear the introduction once on entry, without repetition when returning to the grid. Focus order is carefully managed, and alt text makes every interactive object clear. Decorative elements are hidden from assistive technologies. Keyboard navigation is fully supported, with visible but unobtrusive focus outlines.

Subtle audio design further enhances the experience. A light “tap” plays when learners interact, providing rhythmic feedback that creates a syncopated feel and reinforces progress without distracting from the content.

This approach combines simplicity, interactivity, sound design and accessibility, making the activity quick to complete yet effective in demonstrating the impact of clear communication at work.
